Hi, Dr. O.,

One of my horses is blind and was diagnosed with detached retinas by an opthamologist at the University of Tennessee. Their comment was that it was probably due to blunt trauma.

I mentioned this to our local vet and she said that disease can cause detached retinas in addition to blunt trauma.

What diseases would cause this in a horse?

Thanks.

Any inflammatory / infectious condition of the chroid or vitreous humor can cause a detached retina.

I have a 19 year old qtr horse that I barrel race. He is still very competetive and most people guess his age at 14. He is excellent shape and health. However, I believe his vision is deterating in his left eye. We have a large area for trail riding and a narrow path sand track. When we are excerising and we are going around for the second time often the sand will be kicked up and dark in certain spots. He jumps sideways to avoid the dark sand. Apparently he thinks they are holes. Also, he will shy at things that are on his left. Keep in mind this is a horse that does not spook at anything. We have been running on this same track for 4 years. So far this has not transferred into the arena. He loves running barrels and gives his all and focuses on his job. With the height of rodeo season upon us I am concerned. Do I need a specailist to exam him. Have any of you experienced this. His eys look normal, no apparent cloudiness, and they are not weepee or infected.

Hello Dianne,
If you suspect an eye problem, I would have a veterinary opthamologist examine your horse.
