I was looking at Hanks crappy feet today....and I am WELL AWARE he needs a trim, but his frog has a slit in it and I could peel it off fairly easy I think, should I leave it alone? It's been there awhile and I wonder about thrush, or a rock getting in there. Is this just his frog sloughing? Thanks

Go ahead and peel it off, Diane, if it peels easily. If not, then you can either keep it really clean until it gets more ready to come off, or cut it forward to the point at which it isn't a flap.

Thanks Holly is that how they shed their frogs? I've never seen this in all the years I've had horses.
Hanks foot has become so weird tho since his founder, I never know what to do anymore.

Frogs can shed many different ways . . . from front to back, back to front . . . even side to side . . . If it is a catch all for dirt and manure, just be sure to clean it. Easier, though, to just cut it off. It's just dead skin and will grow back. I have seen shedding frogs many times with all kinds of horses. Not sure if we conditions or dry conditions bring it on the most. I have seen it in all kinds of weather. This year, I have had a few horses who have needed to have some skin cut from one of their frogs, but other horses, despite the soaking wet conditions, have had excellent feet.

I went and peeled it off, it did have thrush under it, so I cleaned it well and dumped betadine on it.
Hopefully that's the end of that and he don't become sore on it. Thanks for your help, I wouldn't have been brave enough to do it otherwise.

Diane, you'd LOVE my 26 y.o.'s frogs...she sheds them, gets thrush, gets tunnels in them...we've done everything to try and stop it, but the thrush always comes back. It didn't even matter that it's been so dry here that their feet are all like rocks! She still has thrush....!

Like Holly said, peel away what you can...I do it with all three of mine; it makes me feel like I'm contributing somehow!
