My colt got his foot hung inbetween a gate and fence post. THe next morning we found him, called the vet and he cleaned it wrapped and gave him a shot. Xrayed it and not broken. He unwrapped it 3 days later and gave his topical antibiotic spray. IT is now 2 weeks later he can barely walk. We called another vet and he gave him a shot of antibiotics and left us with instructions. He said the riding career of this colt is probably over. The wound is infected and into the tendon sheath. He wasn't sure about the joint. He didn't even pick up the foot. The wound is on both sides of the pastern and is red, swollen, mottled and draining a white pus. How grim is it?

Geez Jennifer,
With so little information and unable to examine the wound we do not know the prognosis. If there is active infection in the sheath the horse needs aggressive daily wound care including possibly having the sheath flushed and this needs to start now. Have one of the veterinarians refer you to a hospital that has experience with infected synovial sheaths as this may be what the future of this horses soundness turns on.
