Does anyone know what this could be: Oscar has been forming black crusty crud on the skin just above the coronary band. It is easily removed with oil and a little scratching. The hoof at the coronary band is flacking and peeling in chunks. I have been using raw linseed oil on him for about 2 1/2 months now. My farrier reports it has really helped the condition of his hooves. This just started with the warm/wet weather. My farrier looked at it and advised a profession opinion. I am in the process of doing that. Meanwhile, can anyone give me any ideas on what to do?

I too think you need to get a professional opinion as your description does not really fit any disease clearly. In the mean time I would keep the area clean and dry by cleansing with antibactterial shampoos, thoroughly drying, then appling either betadine or chlorhexidine with a spray bottle and allowing it to dry on it.
