My filly is having surgery tomorrow on her umbilical cord. She is 5 weeks old and we have been having difficulties with it since she was born. The dam jumped right up after the filly was born and tore the cord. Which, I know is normal but, this chord was extra thick. It was about ¾ of an inch thick. Blood was squiring everywhere! Spurt, spurt spurt. I ran for twine and by the time I returned it had subsided. I treated it with iodine three times. It looked like a hernia but was not. The chord had actually pulled out along with the skin leaving a 4” wide by 3” long “flap” if you will, of skin! A real eyesore. About 10 days later, it was looking “wet”. We treated it with Silvernirtate sticks for 4 days and sprayed Alluspray each time. It had closed up but still looked terrible. Again it is getting wet and thickening. Therefore, we are going to Marion DuPont Scott Hospital in the morning. The mare was just preg checked and is in foal 12 days. Keep your fingers crossed that she does not slip this embryo during all the stress! Thanks for listening and I would like to know if anyone else has had to go through surgery with a baby? Denise

Good luck with your filly! I bet she'll do just fine. I haven't had a foal that needed surgery, but did have a colt that at the age of 2 mos. tried to cut his leg off and needed 72 staples in it. He healed up great. (10 yrs. later still don't know what he did to his leg to injure it so badly.)

Not knowing exactly what is going to be done I am low on specifics but wish you good luck Denise. Umbilicus / urachus surgery is a common thing with a excellent prognosis in foals that are otherwise healthy. DrO

We're home and glad to be... I was very lucky to get her there. She was very infected, although she had no fever. The area which was thickened was 4.5 inches and one artery was very infected. They removed the entire umbilical area. She is doing much better but it will take a few days to have the pain go away. The surgery was far more difficult than I had thought. Thank you for your ears.
