Dr. O,

My little Cushing's mare scraped her right cornea a bit and while the vet was checking her, I had her look at the left eye as she has been showing a lot of startle response to that side. It started so suddenly that I admit I fired a stall cleaner because I thought she had hit her in the head.

The vet found that my mare doesn't appear to see from about 2/3 back on the left side. She found no reason for this and said that she could do more tests but that "there is nothing she could do about it anyway".

Now I'm certain that she has some kind of horrible brain tumor. She has never looked more fit or glossy. She has been naughty and unrecognizable behaviourally, though. She has started chasing dogs out of her paddock and such. Is this meaningful? She has shown some tearing under her fly mask after t/o. Nothing more.

Thank you for your help.

Many horses will chase dogs out of their paddock so I don't think it is significant.

Thanks Dr O.

She didn't used to be bad tempered. Could you please give me some possible reasons for the loss of sight so that I can worry appropriately I mean read up on things?

Kerry there are no common causes of partial sight loss like you describe, it is not helpful as anyone cause is unlikely. You should have a thorough exam done by a veterinary opthamologist and only then can a list of realisitic rule outs be generated.
