My mare has about a dozen or so sarcoid like bumps on her shoulders and hind quarters that recently appeared (last month or so when the flys started getting bad). Some are nodular and hairless, others are more like clusters of tiny lumps. She had some last year and I freaked out thinking she was getting more sarcoids (she had a nodular sarcoid on her neck I treated successfully with a blood root paste a few years ago) and bought the same paste and started treating them. Nothing happened from the paste but they seemed to crust off and go away when fly season was over.

This year she has more and they're larger. The biggest is about the size of a pencil eraser. Just to be safe I've been applying the blood root paste and crest but not aggressively just when I go out which is about 4x per week. I've been researching skin diseases but I can't find anything similar to these except sarcoids. Has anyone had a similar problem with small hairless flesh colored skin tumors that appear in the summer during peak fly season and seem to go away (I hope) during winter months? I will take some pictures of a couple when I go out tomorrow.

Hello Carla,
The number and timing suggests these are unlikely to be sarcoids and far more likely chronic inflammatory reactions to fly bites. For more see the article Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors. It is the first entry in the articles.

I saw that Dr. O and it certainly has occurred to me that they are probably just fly reactions. The majority of these are not, however, smooth nodes although a few are. I'll try and remember to take a few pictures tonight when I go out.
