Hi Dr.O. we have had a very buggy, humid summer. We have had quite a few cattle get pink eye to the point of blindness in one eye....even tho they were treated. We haven't had pink eye problems until this year.

Their eyes are running an of course the flies just hang on them. My horses are pastured right next to them and I was wondering if the flies can transmit this infection to the horses? I do use fly masks, I usually take them off when I feed in the evening, but the flies are still terrible at that time lately so I have been leaving them on until dark. I have noticed Sam and Hanks eyes have been quite runny recently, but figured it was from dust etc. Can horses get pink eye from cattle? Thanks

Diane, as far as I know horses do not get Moraxella bovis (may be old nomenclature), the infectious agent that causes pink eye in cattle. It has been isolated from normal horses eyes and there is one report is association with a conjunctivitis but if it does infect horses it appears to be a rare cause of clinical disease.
