My tb gelding had the staples taken out of his fetlock on Tuesday. The vet had me keep him wrapped for several days to protect the wound a bit longer. Well, I took it off yesterday and it looked great so I kept it off. Today it had blown up. Until now, there has been no swelling. The wound does not appear to be irritated or oozing at all. The vet said to rewrap it tonight with some neosporin on it. My question is does anyone know where the swelling may be coming from? I did read articles and posts related to the subject, but did not find anything of complete relevance to this topic. Thanks for any ideas!

Well Dr. O, as you know each situation is different and I am still unsure of what it is/what the cause is. However, it is silly to think that anyone on here will either, without having seen it. I will post how it turns out.

You might try Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses. It should give you clues as to what to look for to determine the nature of the swelling and possible solutions.

Yes, thanks. That is one of the ones I found last night. It is clearly associated with the trauma of his cut on the fetlock. However, what I am unsure of is why the swelling now? He really has not been swollen since the initial injury two weeks ago. It only swelled the day after I took his bandage off. He is not sensitive to touch and is not lame. It is not terribly hot either. My paranoia is telling me that it has become infected, or maybe the swelling has been contained while wrapped and now it is filling?

Have you taken your horses temperature to see if it supports your idea of infection? What does the article say about swelling from infection? Does this describe what you are seeing with your swelling?

Well, not really because it not hot hot, and it is not painful to touch. I think it was sort of irrational to think it was infected but I tend to let my mind get carried away sometimes. I took the pillow wraps off yesterday and it looked as if the swelling had gone down. I did not take off the vetwrap because I had just put it on the day before. I thought that if it had looked swollen still, I would've taken it off to assess and hose it. But it really looked good. So I stuck the pillow wrap back on for the night and I will peek at it today.

Is it possible that the pressure from the bandage kept it from filling and now that the bandage is off there is not that protection and it will need to slowly absorb the extra fluid?

That is my thought, Ella. It looked good today. Fingers crossed...
