Hi - I get my shavings from a door-maker, and today he had shavings from the Brazilian hardwood IPE. I've been trying to find some information on it, and so far I haven't seen anything that causes me to believe it's toxic for horses. However, I want to be certain before I use the shavings. Does anyone have any experience with IPE shavings?

Hi -no, Ipe is the name of the specific wood, see for example www.ipe-wood.com (Maybe writing it in caps was just confusing). It is a Brazilian hardwood used for making decks, etc. I cannot find anything saying it's toxic for horses, but I'm not certain that makes it safe enough. Any clues? Thanks!

I am afraid I cannot find information on its use around horses James. I went to the site and searched on its genus and specie but nothing comes up. Very few woods are unsafe but there are a few.

It's probably best to steer clear of any "exotic" woods as far as bedding goes.

You don't want your horse to end up as the "poster child" for some oddball reaction.
