Dr. O,

My 2 year old filly got a small triangle shaped wound on the inside of her left front at the bottom of the ankle. It is minor (less than an inch long and about a half inch wide at the top) but I would like to show her in halter classes and I didn't want the scar that would result in simply snipping off the flap and treating the open wound. I have been putting vet wrap over it to hold it in place.

Today if the 5th day I have had vet wrap on it. It looks good. There is minimal swelling and the flap is stuck in place.

My question is at what point am I o.k. removing the vet wrap and assuming that the flap is going to hold (not peel up)?

I did put her on SMZ's to be sure I would not have an infection result.

Ella B :-)

Hello Ellab,
No I think you need to continue provide daily wound care as recommended in our article on wound care and pressure wrapping considering your stated goal of minimizing scar formation. You may need to keep this wrapped for a month or more before an actual granulation bed reattaches the flap.
