The newest addition to the horsey neighborhood came this morning. Mom (maiden) and baby seem to be doing well except for one thing. The tips of the fillys ears curl backwards, she almost looks like a Kathiawari. The only other notable thing is that she is every so slightly down on one of her rear pasterns. This is not bad and she walks with the limb up right, but if relaxed and nursing the hoof will roll bak on the heel.

I thought I read something about curled back ears, anybody heard anything? I doubt these are going to straighten, at least she has personality!

Hi
Congrats on your new foal.
In my experience the ears will straighten. :-)

I think if you just give her a few days she'll be fine. I don't think the ears are that uncommon, and I know down on the pasterns is quite common. As soon as they get to moving around a little and get a little strength, they usually straighten right up. If she doesn't after a week, I'd have the vet look at her. I bet she's a real cutie right now. Congradulations!

I'll pass the congrats on to the neighbor. Hopefully she called the vet in to check mom and baby out after I left yesterday. The ear thing is quite odd but it is cute. None of the pics I shot really show it, though I was more concerned with helping new mom understand that this wet thing needed to be more than two inches from her to nurse. Although this pic dosen't show the ears it is just too funny! She is a bald face buckskin paint with two blue eyes, two front socks, and two high stockings. I don't know much about paints but I think she just barely has enough white to be registered full.

congrats again on the baby, cutie for sure.
we have always called the curled ears "Lucky Ears" so i relish it in my foals, as most are of race blood. and they normally do straiten out in time.

JoDeen, Do you have paints? I don't know much about this mare but I seem to recall there is a bit of Impressive in her background... that definantly is not raceing material - snicker - From what the neighbor tells me, the filly is walking better on that loose back leg today.

Yes I do have one paint mare with alot of race blood in her. her name is catchatreasure and it is the treasured name with all the race. she also has easy jet in her. he foal this year is a beautiful little filly that we are extremely happy with so far. i have pics if you would like to see them i would love to email them to you.
my email address is levanger@union-tel.com
also i have a litte 4 week old horse colt that was down on his pasturns very bad at birth and for a good 7 to 10 days afterwards. I was a bit concerned cause he was down so badly. but he is coming around well now. he also happens to be my one foal this year with the "lucky ears" LOL
