I own a 19 yr old Morgan mare who was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the sublingual salivary gland. The tumor was removed along with some adjacent lymph nodes which also showed some evidence of cancer. Currently this mare appears healthy. My question, is anyone researching, tracking or treating this type of cancer in horses? I understand it is rare tumor for a horse and that the prognosis is very poor, but she is a special mare (one of only 8 Morgans to earn their Sport Horse title from the American Morgan Horse Assoc.) and I'd like to learn about all the options that are available.

The problem with adenocaricinoma is that by the time it is discovered it has usually metastisized widely Sandy. There is a case of succesfully treated a/carcinoma that was reported by Roy MF, Parente EJ, Donaldson MT, Habecker P, Axon J. Successful treatment of a colonic adenocarcinoma in a horse. Equine Vet J. 2002 Jan;34(1):102-4. They can be reached at: Hopital des Grands Animaux, Faculte de Medecine Veterinaire, Universite de Montreal, St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. I do not have a copy of this report, perhaps your veterinarian could contact them about treatment protocals. Please keep us informed as to how you proceed. DrO
