Posted on Friday, Jun 4, 2004 - 12:16 pm: Hello; My 24 year old Arabian gelding has been 'sick' since Saturday May 29, and I wondered if you had any advice or encouraging words. Jasper colicked very violently and painfully on Saturday afternoon. After some Quadrisol and lots and lots of walking he came around. Sunday he was ok, but on Monday he colicked again, more mildly, but still lots of rolling. Monday night the vet came, and determined that the spleen was trapped in the bowel. He gave a shot of Banamine and phenylephrine IV and we ran him for quite awhile. He seemed to come around and had a quiet night. The next morning (Tuesday) he colicked again. Another vet visit, more Banamine and phenylephrine IV(to shrink the spleen). He settled down nicely. The vet left me Quadrisol and 2 phenylephrine needles to give IM. Wednesday the vet came to check him. He looked great and (naturally) colicked the second the vet got into his truck. More painkillers and phenylephrine IV. Thursday he just seems blah. He isn't actually colicking, but I can tell he feels like crap. The vet suggested more painkillers and phenylephrine, which I gave him. (the phen administered IM) All evening he seemed quiet but ok. At midnight he was very uncomfortable so I gave him Quadrisol and by 1:00 am he had settled down. He slept lying down (outside) for the rest of the night. My question - has anyone had a horse survive an entrapped spleen after going so long? Is there soemthing else we should be doing? When the pain meds kick in he seems pretty well normal, but then the pain always comes back. Jasper survived an entrapment 3 years ago, but he was better right away. I am looking for any other ideas? I don't know how many more bouts he's going to take. Thanks for your help, Sue |

Your horses prognosis depends on the amount of damage to the bowel and waiting worsens his chances.DrO |

They felt that maybe gas had floated the bowel upward. Anyway, he usually is a a gassy sort of fellow. They recommended I might try Succeed. He still appears to be gassy on it, although not as much, is there anything else I might try that would be effective and not as costly? He was scoped for ulcers and has none, he does not have a worm issue, his blood work was excellent, etc., etc., He is stabled, but is ridden or lunged everyday, never is not out of his stall everyday. He goes out to play weather permitting on grass pasture, usually 3-4 hours, which is plenty for him, as he will be a blimp otherwise. He is 17 hands and weighs 1275lbs, he eats 1/2 lb of Purina's Horsemens Edge High Fat 2 times a day and is fed 4 times a day 1st cutting, grass hay 2 big flakes (so 8 flakes a day). He was imported from Ireland where he wasn't fed a lot of grain. I just have him for pleasure, we try to do dressage. Any Advice appreciated.... |
