Dr. O,
My gelding's left eye has been weeping for a very long time now--months if not a year. He blinks and tears drop out of this eye. My vet came out last week and flushed the nasal duct you mentioned. He left an antibiotic ointment with instructions to apply it 3 times a day for 10 days. When he did the flush, he had to heavily sedate my horse, then used a catheter and saline solution. He mentioned that he could not get the catheter very far up the duct, but it did seem to flush ok. Also, when he finished, we noticed blood dripping from the duct. Is that a common occurence during this procedure? Since then, I have been applying the antibiotic, but the eye is still weepy. I keep a fly mask on him during the day. What would the next step be to alleviate this problem? My vet mentioned an endoscope to check out the sinuses? Or an X-ray of the head. Any advice you could give me is appreciated. Thanks. Vicki

I have had light blood tinged clear fluid following a difficult NL duct flushing. I checked the duct next time I was out to be sure it was still patent by putting a little florascein in the eye and watching the dye appear at the duct in a few minutes. Though those next options may be eventually needed I don't think it would be as useful as a trip to a veterinary opthamologist for a indepth evaluation of the eye first.
