I just acquired a gelding that has been neglected by an older gal who had him for 7 years. She didn't have his teeth done or any regular care that should have been done. I got his teeth floated on Monday, the Vet says his teeth were the longest she's ever seen. His top teeth were hitting his lower jaw at the bottom of his lower teeth. Anyway, he has pockets and periodontal disease pretty extensively. I've got him on Tucaprim and started him on a soaked pellet diet for 3 months. My question is, has anyone ever experience anything like this? I don't have any experience and need some encouragement that this will be ok and he won't end up losing all his teeth or worse..is there worse?

Hello Patricia,
Dental problems and associated periodontal diseases are common in older horses however the range of possible problems and the severity of those problems is great. It is hard to judge from your post just how bad your horse's teeth are. Does the "longest teeth ever seen" mean the length of the cingulae and if so was the float able to return the cingulae to a more normal appearance? When you say pockets are you referring to missing teeth or gaps in the teeth (diasthemata)? For a description of these issues see the article but your best advice is going to be from someone who has examined the teeth directly: what has your veterinarian said to expect and are there more detailed records on the exact problems still present?

What she said was there were pockets where his food has been getting impacted. She used her finger to get some of it out. She said it smelled terrible so it has been in there a long time. She wants me to keep him on this antibiotic to see if it will clear itself up. I will also go back in 3 months to see if the dental specialist has to do further work. She said she did what she could, it was extensive. It sounds like the pockets are around the teeth. I'll go in this afternoon and get a copy of the report to share with you. It sounds like it's a save the teeth situation. What a mess he is..I'll get back with you on the report, I can't ever understand the language, you will probably understand it fully.
