Dear Dr. O,
I am thinking of purchasing a arab/Quater cross, who has been ground feed alfala for years, and one other horse on the property had coliced on stones and the vet removed 5 small ones with mineral oil tubeing.
This horse has mildly coliced twice, and came out of it with no intervention. My trainer feels it could be stones, and sugested that I feed him mineral oil and lots of physillium to help get the sand and stones out of his system. Do you think this would help? and how much oil, I was planing on top dressing hay pellets.

How large were the stones that passed Lora? Basically from the information you post so far I would say it is uncertain what the cause of the earlier colics were so when you buy this horse you should consider he is a increase risk of colic from unknown causes. If stones are the problem, neither oil or psyllium with remove the serious ones and if it becomes stuck, surgery will be required. For more on psyllium and sand see the article in the Colic Section on Sand Colic.
