If you have fever and diarrhea in the northern aspects of North America and you are close to large bodies of water where caddis flies reproduce you should add PHF to the list of possibilities during the late summer: Two cases of Neorickettsia (Ehrlichia) risticii infection in horses from Nova Scotia. Can Vet J. 2004 May;45(5):421-3. Heller MC, McClure J, Pusterla N, Pusterla JB, Stahel S. Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, 56 University Avenue, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island C1A 4P3. Two horses from Nova Scotia were diagnosed with Potomac horse fever (PHF). Polymerase chain reaction analysis was performed on formalin-fixed colon tissue or whole blood to show the presence of Neorickettsia risticii DNA, the causative agent of PHF. These are the first reported cases of PHF in the Maritime Provinces.
