I had NEVER heard of such a thing, this tragic Colitis X. I took this lovely colt, Fruhling, to an ISR/Oldenburg inspection where he placed 2nd out of 33. As a proud breeder and very picky mother as to how I raise my young horses and mothers to be, I was devastated as you can imagine to loose this foal after only 12 hours.

It all started (stress) when I took him to the show, weaned him two days later, he hit his head and required 47 staples, antibiotics for the head injury and severe pain from the injury. Within a week all these things happened. Saturday inspections, Monday weaning, Tuesday head injury Thursday fever and Friday death. Just two days after starting the antibiotic Naxcel he started with a fever (11 pm) 103.9 – 105.2. Banamine helped bring down the fever but by morning, he was toxic. Purple gums, plural pneumonia, temp of 96 respiration very high etc. Up until this point, there was no diarrhea!

Could the events leading up to this have caused his demise! I feel responsible even though the doctors that were trying to save his life told me there was nothing I could do. Colitis X is almost 100 fatal. He passed away on Friday the 13th at 11am at Marion DuPont Equine Medical Hospital in Leesburg Virginia.

What is the X of Colitis X?

I am still having a difficult time with the loss of this foal. I was completely unprepared for this to happen. I did get to hold him while he passed away but the suffering he endured until the end was unbearable.

Denise,
How very awful for you . . . how devastating. We can never be prepared for everything life brings to us; we can only try to grow from the experiences and share what we learn with others.

I feel your confusion and pain . . . and the foal's, as well.

You have emotional supporters here, as you must know.

Thank you for sharing with us.

My condolences Denise, I too have lost a horse of my own to Colitis X. The X means we do not know the cause. Most of us believe it is a very toxic form of Clostridial colitis, see Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Diarrhea in Horses »
Clostridium Colitis
for more on this.

Denise
I am so sorry for the loss of your colt, I have a 3 month old of my own whom I adore. I just learned of colitis a few weeks ago when my 3 yr old had the flu from hell and the vets thought it might go to colitis but it did not. Just know we are thinking of you and Fruhling.

I am so sorry for the loss of your baby. I can't imagine the pain you must be going through. I have no experience with colitis but will read up on it immediately. My condolences.
