I have a 14yo Standardbred who had his first episode of Uveitis in March 2004 and a second episode in August 04. He was treated with steroids, antibiotic and bute both times and did well. Following the second attack, I put him on Bute 1/2g twice a day as a preventive measure (per Dr. O's article on ERU). However, in reading Dr. O's article on Bute and the following research on Lower Gastic Ulcrogenic comparison of Bute and suxibuzone, I am concerned about my horse developing ulcers, as I had planned to keep him on Bute continually at this low dose. My questions are:
1. When the low dose of Bute is recommended as a preventive meansure, does that mean possibly 5-15 years (life of the horse)?
2. Would an even lower dose, such as 1/2g.per day or every other day, etc. be effective?
I do not want to help his eye and give him ulcers.

1) Yes. For more on the effects and monitioring of long term bute see, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Phenylbutazone (Bute).
2) We do not know Sharon. In fact there are no good large studies of this practice. Some opthamologist who deal with many dozens of cases think they see fewer and less severe recurrences while a horse is on NSAID's but no one knows what dose might be the minimum.
