Horse's History: born and raised until 4 yrs old in northern Kansas (hot humid climate in summers). Never any sweating problems.
Moved him to western Washingtion state and lived there for 10 years. Competed in dressage and trained hard (mild climate year round. No sweating problems.
Moved to northern Kentucky continued to compete in dressage and train (hot humid climate). No sweating problems.
Spent two winters in Florida to train and compete. (sub tropical climate) no sweating problems.
Moved to southern Kentucky continued to compete and train with no sweating problems.
Feb 2004 shipped gelding back to western washington for training. Trainer reports that in May, June and a couple of other times, horse had elevated respirations from his workout but was not sweating. Cooled down slowly without any other problem. One of the incidents occured while I was there and I thought that it wasn't very hot and that was why he was not sweating. His resps were normal for the work he was doing.
My trainer is concerned. I am puzzled. Blood drawn after one of the incidents was negative (I don't know what was tested.)
Horse is healthy, looks and acts like a 5 yr old. He is on msm, cosequin, Vit E & Selenium crumbles, Master's Hoof blend. He gets glucosamine IM once a week. All of thes supplements he has gotten for three years.
I spoke to the vet up in washington and he didn't think adding the SmartPak supplement would do either any harm or any good. he said that the literature about anhidrosis was contradictory as to causes. I spoke to my regular vet here and she thinks that it is odd for the gelding to develop the problem after leaving high humidity and heat.
Any thoughts? Any bloodwork I should have drawn?
Thanks,
