This may be redundant, but bear with me. I have my 25yo half arab/welsh pony who, too, is suffering from chronic diarrhea and weight loss. He coliced, pretty bad, about a year ago. My vet put him on Prednis, which was working for a while. However, he continued to have runny stool. She suggested Fastrack, and still some runny stool. After contacting her once again, she really didn't have an answer- suggesting Brewers Yeast and Psyllium to manage the symptoms. Please Help- Foxy is my baby and both his parents are still around. He should be around, too-

Hi,
I have no experience with this, but I saw wonderful results in my friends horse who is 30 plus. She puts him on beet pulp with oats it helps this horse within days. Each horse is different and there are different reasons for diarrhea so I am not saying this will work for your horse, but it is an option to try if your vet says its ok and nothing else works.

Robin, to make specific recommendations that might help your case we have to know what is wrong and that information is not in your post. Our article on Diarrhea Overview gives step by step suggestions for trying to find the cause and if that fails a list of suggestions to try to see which helps. Study the article and discuss it with your veterinarian to see what your best next step would be.

Dr. O-
I have read the article and it was informative. My Vet performed a blood test on him in the fall and she reported the results were indicative of "an apbsorption problem in the bowel". I discussed this with my childhood riding instructor- the swelling is a symptom of something. Perhaps MS? However, To rule out others, I'm going to try the 5 day Panacur program. Also, I'm going to change his feed to a closed formula based food. As well as add the Psyllium and Yeast. Any other ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-

Robin, would it be possible to get the blood results (both normals and abnormals) and post them here? We have an article on malabsorption at, Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Weight Loss in Horses » Malabsorption in Horses.
