I recently purchased a 3.6 yr old Thoroughbred Mare; she arrived in excellent spirits and remained that way until the day we realized that she needed three of her baby teeth removed and we did so. She remained down for the day; that night we also had more than a significant drop in outdoor temperature which we know she is not used to in Florida and the next day she behaved as if in colic; we brought the Vet back and he concurred and we treated for colic. The next day she was going through the diarhea and she was still laying down (often; though short periods) and her eating was not returning to normal. Water intake was and is good; no dehydration noticed. Three days went by and we still didn't see further improvement; we brought the Vet back; it was suggested that there was a possibility that she had Ulcers; we placed her on Meds for that for Three days. The improvement could be noted as she was more alert and she was showing signs of wanting to eat; we are increasing her slowly. It has now been one and a half weeks; She is more alert; however, she is still laying down often though short periods. She will still use her front foot to aim for her stomach and she is still looking to her stomach while lying down. (She lays both horse fashion and straight out flat). My question; we are at a loss; blood work is normal; white count; red count everything. He said the only elevation deals with the "stress" and that is not very high; all vitals are good, no duress. Today we were able to see her urinate and it wasn't normal. It appeared almost a deep tannish in color (not red) and it was definately cloudy. Is it possible that she could have a Urinary tract infection even without it showing on the blood workups? I would be grateful for any suggestions or new questions I should be asking; I am at a loss.

This certainly is an easy enough question to clear up you need to collect a sample and immediately take it to the veterinary office for analysis and cytology. However cloudy urine can be normal in horses with significant amounts of calcium in the diet. Also the bladder should be examined for stones with a ultrasound, colic would be more consistant with stones than infection.

The history of FL, diarrhea, normal CBD, and colic suggests possible sand colic but there are many possibilities, for a thorough discussion of possible causes see, Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Colic in Horses » An Overview of Colic.
