  Discussion on Noisy Mare

I was reading the posts about noisy sheaths and there was mention of a procedure called Caslick for mares which prompts me to write.

I have a student who just bought a mare (I have 5 geldings and have never owned a mare). Anyway this mare makes a noise like she is sucking air into her vagina. She makes the noise whether or not she is under saddle. She has had 3 foals that I know of. One thing that has consistently caught my attention when I'm there is that she sweats profusely. This mare is soaking wet (neck, chest, stifles, girth) within 10 minutes of her hour long lesson. My student is a beginner so it's not like it's a grueling workout. Her trot is short and choppy because she hollows her back and bobs her head. In the post I read, it mentioned that this air sucking can be painful. Could this be causing this mare pain to the point of her tense behavior and sweating?

Has anyone had a mare that did this? Is there a name for this?

Thanks - Coleen

The medical term is pneumovaginia and if it invades deeper pneumouterus. No I don't think this is likely to be painful but I think a clear indication for a Caslicks. If this invades the uterus it will set up a chronic inflammatory response that over time could be detrimental to her ability to reproduce. And besides I could be wrong, wouldn't it be great if this simple procedure improves her work.

Thanks Dr. O

I guess we will not get our hopes up that this could be that miracle cure we all wish for.
