Have there been any studies on the causes of aneurysm in horses? What percentage due to parasite damage? Has it been shown to be familial?

Welcome Sweetbay,
I do not know of a familial incidence of aneurysm. Aneurysm is a rare though reported phenomena in the horse and both acquired and congenital causes proposed. Often aneurysm occurs secondary to other heart disease, some of which may have been present at birth. The location of the aneurysm, coexisting cardiovascular disease, and the histopath of the abnormal vessel tissue would be helpful in answering these questions for a particular case.

Thanks for your reply. I am curious about this issue because I had a mare who died of a ruptured main uterine artery shortly after foaling. I spoke to the pathologist who examined her and she didn't say anything about lesions in the vessel.

This mare did colic a couple of times while she was pregnant. She had never colicked in the 5 previous years I'd known her. We were able to resolve the problem by turning her out 24/7 and walking her when she didn't seem to be exercising herself enough, but this makes me wonder if there was an aneurysm present then making her uncomfortable.

Probably not. Uterine artery rupture is unfortunately not rare in periparturient mares. Excessive tension from the pregnancy or birth is the proposed reason. For more on this see, Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Birthing Problems » Colic in Pregnant and Post Foaling Mares.
