Recently I had a prepurchase done on a 9yr old trak gelding. To make a long story short, this horse was sound and has mostly been since he arrived at my farm to be sold. There was aperiod of 3 days right after he was reset that he was slightly off in the front. This horse is a good mover and would suit me perfectly. Radiographs were taken of the hind fetlock because of suspicion on the vets part. Flexion test was fine. Bone chip was found on xray. FRont findings were Naviculers not great but there was evidense of demineralization in the coffin bones, both fronts. So now I'm reading that irregularity is normal on horses. I think I should bag this because she said dont touch this one with all of these strikes against it. But the odd thing is that he is so sound. She agrees that it is puzzleing. For kicks I am having her show the xrays to a track vet friend of hers, just for his spin on the diagnosis. Is this something in your travels you would forget about or pursue. I have had an old sore horse for along time and i would like something i won't have to baby. Thank you.

Hello Judy, the devil is in the details. It depends on the lesions but it can be very hard to assess loss of mineralization from a set of field radiographs: the appearance of density is solely determined by exposure and the exposure is dependent on current conditions in the barn. This varies so exposure varies and the appearance of density varies. The changes may be so remarkable that your vet is sure but I like your idea of getting a second opinion. DrO
