Greetings, My pony is going in for tendonoscopy surgery and I am getting 2 conflicting opinions. First of all, he is unshod right now. The lameness vet wants him to have egg bar shoes for support and recommends that he is shod before surgery. The surgeon however is saying the shoes might be a problem in his recovery as they will be slippery (I guess when he gets up?). They are asking me to make a decision - I have asked them to talk to each other and come up with a joint recommendation. Does anyone out there have any advice to add?

Thankyou!

Hi DeeAnn

Sorry to hear of your pony's problem. Could you tell us which tendon is involved, on which leg and what the degree of injury is? I ask because I remember DrO once posted some research (carried out in the Netherlands if I remember rightly) which showed that eggbar shoes, wedges, etc., while reducing stress on certain tendons/ligaments, actually increased it on others.

I also can't help wondering why the shoes would be slippery - it would depend presumably on the footing?

Good luck with the surgery!

Put the bar shoes on. They work for an issue like this one. The slippery comment is nonsense.

If the vet is concerned about shoes being slippery, they make a "stall slipper" that will slip on over the foot and shoe. They are made to prevent horses from injuring themselves when lying down, but are made with non-slip soles. I'm not sure of the brand name, but saw some this past week while in So. California at Mary's Tack and Feed. If you can't find them elsewhere, call Mary's or look for them on line; Mary's Tack and Feed in either Del Mar, or Solana Beach, CA.

Welcome DeeAnnB,
I think you have it exactly right without our help: get the conflicting partners to come to a consensus, they know much better that us the particular situation your horse will be facing.
