My neighbor's horse was limping in round pen today. Upon closer look, seems that there is an abscess that has ruptured on the outside of her front left hoof, about 2 inches from the ground. Can't really tell if it "blew out" or was an external injury, but there is a definite hole about dime size in the external hoof wall, and no visible damage underneath. Seems to be draining (puss?), but couldn't really tell find any heat in the leg or foot. Neither of us has any experience with this type of condition, and vet can't come until Monday. Could someone point me to some info I might share with her? It is not in the coronet, so I'm not sure if I was reading the correct article.

Hello Michelle,
I have to say I have a hard time picturing a "hole" developing in the middle of the wall in any manner other than trauma. Abscesses don't pop out in the middle of the hoof wall so I really don't know what to say.
