Hi Dr O, yesterday afternoon I noticed my horse's right eye was unusually red on the inside corner of the sclera. He had been rolling in the sandy turnout and I had also been grazing him in an area where the plants and grass were possibly high enough to scratch him. I rinsed the eye lightly with cool water. Today (24 hrs later) when I checked on him he still has redness and some slight swelling of the upper and lower lids. He has no tearing, discharge, squinting or cloudiness that I could detect and doesn't appear in pain or discomfort. There is one red spot that looks like it might be trauma. The sclera on the outer side of the eye is normal. Should I have the vet out? I don't want to delay if it sounds like something that should be looked at.

Hello Susanne,
We cannot make this decision for you however eyes that do not have signs of pain or ocular discharge are not often emergencies.

The article on inflamed eyes helps to sort out the significance of various changes and make recommendations.
