Dr. O - I have searched all the discussions and don't find any to match my horses newest issue. His hind end seems to be slipping out from underneath him. Yesterday he looked swollen (soft watery masses over shoulders) today the swelling looked even more so - chest, hind and shoulders have soft swollen areas.) Yesterday he was sore everywhere. His right hind end gave out and I thought he was going to fall when I was brushing him. Vet came out said she didn't know what was going on but yes, he was very stiff and very sore all over. She took blood - only showed a slightly low white blood count. Temp was normal. This is the same horse who has PSSM and REU. She did tests for EPM. He didn't show any great signs of neur. issues. Put him on Bute and Muscle Relaxants. Any thoughts from anyone? Other thing; he looks like he has blown up - belly area in the last few weeks.

Oh,Sue, I wonder what is going on with him? What else did the vet test for? Anything? Has he been eating anything new? Turned out anywhere new? Any other changes that you can think of? Is he still eating and drinking normally? Fever? How large are the swellings? Poor guy. I hope Dr.O. has some good ideas for you. It's very strange sounding. If there is edema for some reason the belly will often get swollen looking, like with a "shelf" of swelling under the roundness of the belly, if that discription makes sense. I hope you're able to find out what his problem is. Good luck!

Hello Sue, Does your horse pasture with other horses or is there someplace he could have become cast? Though it is not clear, pain and swelling on the body without fever suggest trauma with bruising and edema. A lot of diagnostic information can be obtained from the nature of the swelling for more on this see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.
