Last Thursday my horse had an accident (for which I unfortunately was at fault for). She ended up running around my yard with a saddle flinging around under her belly. She wiped out on my pavement driveway. She cut the inside of her mouth which bled quite a bit. I have been rinsing daily and the vet came out Monday and said she would be fine. I had reported a smell and thought it may have been infected. He did not give her antibiotics or anything for that matter.
Now, this evening I noticed 3 swellings. 1 large one under her belly. One not so big in diameter but "fatter" towards her stifle area and the last one is a swelling inside her back thigh. All are tender. She is running a temp of nearly 104 degrees.

Could these be related to the injury?

Any idea what this could be?

Also....she appears well otherwise. She is eating and not showing signs of lameness. She is tender at the swelling sites. I am in Houston and the temps reached near 90 today. I do not have a temperature record on her so I am not sure what is normal for her in the heat.
I do not believe it is a kick from my gelding nor are there any cuts or scrapes visible.

Cheryl:

My horse had a fall on pavement this past year and cut is mouth and lower lip pretty bad and, like your horse, bled quite a bit. He made a full recovery from that injury and, according to my vet, the horses mouth responds extremely well to healing. Apparently, the blood circulation in the mouth and lips is extremely strong and condusive to healing. Thought you might like to know that. My vet was only concerned about infection and gave him a penusulin shot.

I can't comment on the swelling with any kind of related experience or real knowledge but based on the fall you describe it might only be delayed edema from the experience. Perhaps cold hosing would help and you should keep an eye on it.

It is odd that this happens almost a week following the accident but the history certainly suggests the swellings might be swelling from accident. The 104 fever is not just environmental but indicates infection. There may be a missed wound, perhaps a puncture on the belly, that has become infected, which accounts for the delayed swelling. You should have your vet out to evaluate this today.

Swelling is down slightly this morning. Temp remains.
I will phone the vet in the next few minutes.

thanks
