How concerned should I be when my 10yo gelding shows a nose bleed after a strenuous workout? Whenver I am working on his fitness, he tends to have a small nosebleed <50 cc total. Am I just working him too hard? |

Sorry, typo, should have been <10 cc (or even 5cc). To clarify: a "strenuous" working can be a one-hour lesson which have resulted in nosebleeds on a few occasions. His fitness level bumped up a bit and then they stopped. Now, we're taking him up another notch and I'm seeing it again. P.S. He is a Friesian. |

I agree with CherylA that this sounds like a probable case of EIPH but this needs to be confirmed with endoscopy to rule out the much more serious guttural pouch mycosis (GPM) and other possibilities as discussed in the article on Nose Bleeds. You will find articles on EIPH and GPM in the respiratory disease topic. DrO |
