Just researched and found your 12/2004 discussion with Karen Copeland regarding swelling on the forehead of her horse. I have a 19 y.o. thoroughbred who has the same problem, I think. He was ridden on a trail ride on a Friday, by Sunday evening he was in his stall with a fever. The vet gave antibiotics and fever DrOpped over night but in the am his right nostril began to run yellow discharge. By the afternoon it was out of both nostrils. He was taken to the vet who kept him for 7 days during which time he was given antibiotics pretty much daily. They ran blood work and found white cell count was off and he tested low positive for Strangles. He was brought home on 7th day with not discharge. The vet has not addressed the bump between and by his eyes. I am wondering what was the outcome of Karen's horse since the photo looks pretty much like our horse, except I can cup my hand over the bump on ours. It is not hot and has not developed any opening. He does not like it messed with and I have tried hot pack. I am considering hauling him to Colorado State University Vet Hospital for radiographs. Should I proceed or just wait to see what develops. If it is strangles, isn't this a strange place for it to break out? He seems fine mentally, however, spends much time in stall & run (my horses are on pasture days). He has just not thrived all summer.

Welcome Evelyn,
Would it be possible for you to post images of your swelling? If the swelling is between the eyes it is unlikely to be Strangles. What is your veterinarians opinion of the swelling?
