Hi Dr. O

My mare had a seizure as a result of an accidental corotid arterial injection of Xylazine. Fortunately she recovered from the seizure. The vet gave her solu-delta cortef and banamine. We also started her on gastro gard for suspected ulcers. Approximately 1- 2 days after her seizure she started consuming large quantities of water and flooding her stall. This has been going on for approx 2 weeks. She has been on thyro l and has always been a big drinker/pee but this is even more excesive. I had run an I/R test in the spring which came back neg and we just ran an ACTH which came back 19 normal. I am very concerned about her and am wondering if the seizure or soulu delta cortef could be playing a role in this. I have called the vet back to do more blood work and possibly a urine.

Thanks,

M Silv

Hello M Silv,
Yes large doses of steroids can cause PU/PD but the Solu-Delta-Cortef, a very fast acting drug, should have worn off by now. IF this persists consider the recommendations for exploring this in Diseases of Horses » Urinary System » Excessive Drinking and Urination, Polydipsia / Polyuria (PD/PU). I have not heard of a "psychogenic" PD caused by seizure.
