My mare has developed a large swelling on what I call the inner leg muscle, where the two legs meet under the tail. (Difficult to explain the location.)It is very warm to the touch, painful if pushed, but she doesn't mind it if just touched. No sign of any trauma or any other significant marks. She has no temp, acts normal, does not limp on that leg. Any ideas? She is in extreme heat, but I can't figure how that could be a cause. Thanks for any and all thoughts on this. At this point I'm just checking it daily, since it appeared yesterday.
Thanks,
Shirl

Shirley, is there anyway she could have caught her leg or foot under a rail or got herself in a corner where it was hard for her to get up, and she then strained her upper leg? I ask because my old mare got herself in a weird position last year while laying in the sun up next to the barn. Evidently, she couldn't get herself up as she was kind of in a hole in a corner. We went out and got her up, but she strained a muscle in her inner upper right rear leg before we got there as she was gimpy on it for a day or so, and it was quite swollen. It will still swell up from time to time, but not nearly as bad. Her's wasn't painful to the touch, but only to deep pressure. Now when it swells, there doesn't seem to be any pain, she seems to enjoy it when I message it with cool gel. Of course, you don't say if it looks like muscle swelling or is more of a cyst type swelling.

Shirley, does the skin between the legs look irritated from urine scalding? I have seen both urine and sweat scald this area and cause local, including mammary and preputial, swelling.

Shirley,

Dr. O stole some of my thunder, But I was going to say irritation from her heat secretions and perhaps rubbing her butt against something.

I had a mare that used to try and hook her legs over the bottom rung of the fence trying to rub her butt during her heat cycles, everything with her was normal too and she never did have any injuries ( at least that I could see). Since this coincides with her heat cycle, I would tend to look at this as a cause.

Only the next few days after she comes out of heat will tell you if this is it.

Thanks Dr. O and all,
We really do not have ticks here in hot, dry Arizona. The skin doesn't seem to be irritated, and I try to keep her clean where she constantly seeps "stuff". She has a really large pen, but she possibly strained the muscle getting up, though she's never had trouble at 16. My guess is, and I agree, it's heat related, though it's odd it would be so warm to the touch. Either that or she was bitten by a spider, trying to keep warm in that nice warm area. :o) It seems to be receding some, so here's hoping. Thanks all for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

Dr. O and others who responded,
The area of swelling seems to be receding along with her heat cycle. Coincidence? Probably. I suspect she may have sprained that muscle getting up from odd position, etc. At any rate thanks for your thoughts.
