My arab has a large, swollen area under her butt cheek. It seems like gravity has pooled a lot of liquid there. It's as if a water balloon were attached...it's very liquidy. The area is not warm, has no marks or bite wounds near it, and does not seem to be painful. She is sound, bright-eyed, and has a normal appetite. I have never seen anything like this. It feels like a bag of water. Any ideas?? Should I call vet or wait until Monday? (I'm not inclined to treat it as an emergency, since she seems to be comfortable.) |

Your description is most like a seroma which would almost certainly be from trauma. I am having a hard time identifying the location "under the butt cheek". DrO |

Back in the hindquarters under the curve of the rump, near the gaskin, but up from there. I don't know of any precise name for this part of the anatomy. It's definitely in a kickable zone. And...there has been a herd visitor, so new kicking wouldn't surprise me. Is there anything I need to watch for or do? Thanks, Dr O! |

Increasing size, heat, and pain would be indicative of infection. This particular area is also prone to the complication of fibrosing myopathy following trauma for more on this see Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Muscle & Tendon Diseases » Fibrotic or Ossifying Myopathy & Myositis. A lack of lameness argues against it as a possibility but has the horse been carefully evaluated for lameness? DrO |

I rode her and her trot felt sound (we didn't canter), but will lunge her and see if I notice anything. I don't claim expertise, though having been through a few lameness evals, I have somewhat of a clue. Do you think I should have a vet out for a lameness eval? Maybe I can get my neighbor with a better eye to take a look. Reading the description of FM, it sounds like it would be pretty obvious. And she has been getting exercise, though perhaps of the wrong kind (rode her before i realized something was wrong) and yesterday, had her going over trot pole in-hand.) I will start hand walking her today. |
