Hi, Dr. O. I'm in process of buying a sweet 6 yr old gelding, but I've not yet brought him home. About 2-1/2 months ago, while being kicked by another horse through a pipe fence, he reared and caught his "armpit" area (for lack of a more educated term) on a cut-pipe fence post, leaving a 6 inch full skin tear. He was stitched up but of course tore out the stitches within the first week. Since then, the wound has been healing well. The rancher's vet has her spraying the wound with scarlet oil. The wound is pretty well closed up but is still "sticky" in the fold between leg and chest/belly. At this point, he has had only stall rest since mid-October, except for a quick trot out of the pen last week for a vet check. He's been given the OK to travel now, so I plan to bring him home in about 10 days, and then I'll put him under my vet's care, but in the meantime, I was wondering, typically, how much time I should expect for such a wound to heal. At what point could he be turned out for exercise, and considering where the wound is, how long should I expect before he can be saddled and ridden? The rancher's vet had originally said 2 months to heal, but we're past that, and the wound clearly needs more time. I love this guy, and the wound won't affect my purchase -- I'm just trying to get a feel for what type of activity he can have, and when. He's feeling good and wants to get out and play, but I don't want to let him overdo it and reopen the wound.

Hello Carol,
From your description I cannot make a judgement which would require knowing the extent of the original injury and where it is currently at. Perhaps several good photos would help us help you with healing time for the skin but the turn out recommendations specifically for your horse will have to depend on someone who can examine the horse directly.
