My 16 yr. old Arab Mare has an enlarged badder opening it should be about finger width and instead you could put your fist in it, she leaks urine all the time and her back legs are a mess. The vet wants to try to surgically make the opening smaller. Has anyone heard or this being done successfully? If this doesn't work we are going to put her down due to her extreme discomfort. Thanks for any information I can get. Linda |

How very odd Linda, Did this occur from trauma? Just making the opening of the urethra smaller is not going to prevent incontinence. The issue is the muscles at the neck of the bladder. They are responsible for control of urination. Control of these muscles is a very complicated mix of voluntary and involuntary nerve impulses as anyone badly needing to urinate can attest to. If trauma is the cause and the surgeon skilled, placing the various muscles layers back in proper apposition may indeed return fuction if the nerve supply is intact. If the problem is with the nervous control there are some drugs that can be attempted. But the prognosis is poor. If I remember correctly, the choice of drugs depends on whether you have a flacid bladder leaking or a full turgid bladder leaking. In the first case you want to tighten the muscles, and in the second loosen them. DrO |
