I wrote about my baby that had NSE surgery last Sunday. He has had ups and downs and what I consider some strange complications.

He had an impaction day 2. Then day 4 and 5 had terrible diarhea and at day 6 he had another impaction.
He now has passed some manure that is soft and he continues to eat and drink.

The vets feel it is just that his colon is inflamed and causing him pain and that it is just his body trying to heal itself.

He is on tri omega, gastrogard, glutamine, banamine, and tucoprim.

Should I be concerned or is this just a normal complication? He had no damage in his colon although they did "dump" it during surgery.

His bloodwork is normal, so could anything else be going on?

How old is your fellow? Is he indeed a baby or a grown baby like over 2 years ?
I think what you are being told could be what they say or a number of other things like Clostridia ,or lawsona. has he been tested for the two above.
What about worms ?? what about Salmonella this can show up as you describe especially after stress.
I do wish you well and hope he is fine.

he will be 1 year old on the 23rd of Feb. He doesn't have any classic signs of Lawsonia and he is on the older side, but yes I did ask if that was a possibility.
Having C.diff could also be, but he is still on the antibiotics and the diarrhea has stopped.

They did culture for Salmonella, so I am waiting for those results to come back. Of course they take a while to come in so I am on pins and needles!

He def does not have worms. He is on a monthly worming schedule that the vet put him on when I asked him the right combos to give him. He is also on a very small farm with very few horses.

I hope he is fine too. He just doesn't have a symptom that coincides with another sypmtom. No fever, good bloodwork, great hydration (despite the 1.5 days of diarrhea)

Sam.
Ok so he is a baby... Poor Boy this is so frightening for you.
You know you have him on Gastrogaurd and this is a really good thing I thing it cant harm him and it certainly will help if he has a Ulcer just because you worm monthly is exactly why you should check out the worm possibility's however he would probably have funny blood work some where if this was going on.
Just some thoughts I will check back later I hope he is feeling better today.
I hope some of the board see this discussion and and offer something to help.

Hello Samantha,
It is not a "either or" question. Yes, these kinds of complications are common but yes, until the foal returns to normal there is some concern. All in all according to your postings things seem to be headed in the right direction.
