Dr. O,
My 12 year old Paint gelding gets very itchy starting this time of year (February). He eventually loses all the hair on the top of his tail by May. The skin at the top of the tail gets red and crusty. His knees, chest and tail itch him.
I found your article on itching. I saw that you recommend Benadryl 1-2mg/kg every 8-12hrs. My horse is approximately 1,100lbs.
An earlier post said to use 25 mg for each 100 lbs which would mean 11 tablets twice a day. I figured your dosage would be about 15 twice a day (However, I'm not good at Kg/pound conversions). Which is correct?

Your horse weighs about 500kg.
So, the dose would be between 500mg and 1000mg per day. I don't know how many mg are in a tablet.
If 50mg per tablet, it would be 10 to 20 per dose.

Hello Angela,
In general we recommend you find the cause of the allergy and prevent exposure. Everything else is a band-aid that often does not work that well. Antihistamines may help some and the article dosage would likely be the most accurate but before using any medication you should double check with your veterinarian before administration.
