Stem cell therapy has been introduced to horses in order to address the problem of tendon, ligament, and joint cartilage injury in horses. These injuries continue to present with healing difficulties which can result in permanent lameness despite aggressive treatment. Perhaps best studied is the use of stem cells to repair damaged tendons. Tendons tend to heal with a weaker and poorly organized fibrous tissue replacing the torn tendon fiber. Anything less than the normal fibro-elastic strands aligned along the lines of strain are predisposed to reinjury. This article discusses the principles of stem cell therapy, different methods of obtaining stem cells, how they are used in the treatment of tendonitis, desmitis, and cartilage damage in horses, and the prognosis of this type therapy.
