Dr O, have you had any experience with fly sprays containing citronella causing hives. My 2 horses both came up with big blotchy hives. I am sure it must be from being sprayed with a fly product with citronella. Has anyone had this experience? Also, will they go away after a few days or should I do something about them. They are acting fine.
thanks
sue

YES! One of my 3 boys is allergic to fly sprays containing citronella products and also to Avon "Skin So Soft." Though they looked horrid at first, his hives resolved completely within a very few days. Now I pre-test any new fly products on a small area of the neck before spraying all over. I cannot recall if I put any specific product on the skin to help relieve the itching but some witch hazel or MILD liniment, aloe or Caladryl might help. You could check the article on this site about hives, etc. My boy's hives due to topical allergies have never required treatment with medications taken internally.

Me too! Last year I sprayed my mare with a cheaper product which I'm guessing contained largely citronella. Big weals came up on her and I thought they were fly bites and sprayed her more. A couple of days later she wouldn't let me touch her, not like her at all, and a cold damp morning revealed her skin was red-hot. I twigged it straight away and gently washed her for the next 3 days with cold water and hibiscrub (can't tell you how bad I felt). After that her skin cooled down but then all her skin went crusty and great areas of hair fell out - not good in the summer sun. This year I've used a different product and she has had a slight reaction in the saddle area and over her croup but strangely the rest of her is unaffected. Its almost impossible to get fly repellents here in the UK which don't contain citronella and she gets bitten badly so its a real problem. Suggestions on a postcard anyone?!!

Hello All,
Just about anything we put on our skin repetitively can cause an allergic response an citronella (or some commonly associated chemical) is certainly one I see. Helen have you considered a fly sheet?

Susan, you should shampoo with a mild product, rinse thoroughly and you may find cold water alone will control the hives until they go away.
