Hi Dr.O, Once again my filly is experiencing the squirts! Only this time it's BRIGHT GREEN and very runny! When I say green it looks exactley like the alfala hay I'm feeding her dam only as if it were put thru a blender! The filly has been eating, or at least lipping up the chaff from the hay quite vorociously and I'm wondering if this is whats causing the diarrhea? I plan on having my Vet out tomorrow if this continues. Also, other then the "squirts" she seems fine!

Hmmmm...the color may well be do to the alfalfa she has been eating but for more on evaluating diarrhea in 2 week old foals see Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Diarrhea in Horses » Foal Heat Diarrhea.

Hi Dr.O, great articles and very informative!!
I do think this may be caused by the combo of the hay and the mares foal heat so I'm just keeping an eye on the filly and keeping her poor little bottom as clean as possible! I can't believe how hot the poo is to have burned the hair right off of her lil' behind! I've washed and put Desitin on but she is not a happy little camperThanks again for your expertise!

Teri

Make sure that what you are cleaning him with is very mild.

Also, if the rash starts looking really wet, I use a little corn starch on it. Will help keep the moisture drier and hopefully ease the rash up a lot.

Thanks Tami! I'm using a diluted mix of Ivory soap and then rinsing thoroughly, drying and then putting Desitin on her poor lil tushie
