Dr. O and Everyone,
I'm not sure this is the proper place to discuss this but here goes. Of late I've noticed a bit of dark, dried, crusty "stuff" around Sedona's vulva that appears to be blood. Very small amount. Upon separating the edges of the vulva right inside the edges look very red and irritated. I know they do bleed some during the cycle but this seems to be ongoing. Any ideas? I'm about to have the vet come but wanted to check here} first and couldn't find any information on this type thing.
Thanks for any and all ideas.

Shirl

Hi Shirley, Is it possible Sedona is rubbing her tail causing irritation? I know my mare does this occasionally so I have to wash her behind off and her udders and she seems better after that and the irritation leaves....until next time! Seems to happen about twice a year and a good cleaning fixes it. Hope Sedona is OK

Thanks for posting Diane. Sedona's tail is fine, so it's not that and I frequently clean her udders so there's no build up there either. Ah well, it's been 7 months since I've had a vet bill so I guess it's about time. :o)

Hope you're doing okay with all your horsie trials. Seems it's about time you have a break, not of the bone kind either!

Hugs and thanks,
Shirl

Hello Shirley,
First lets note that bleeding is not normal during any part of the mares estrus cycle, at least not that I have ever noticed.

I find a crusty reddish secretion normal around the ventral vulva and clitoris of mares. This represents the accumulated dried defoliated mucosal cells of the upper reproductive tract. Where the pigment stops just inside the edge of the vulva the mucosa is normally fairly pink, considerably pinker than the gums mucosa and if left exposed to air for more than a few seconds can redden noticeably.

That all said I cannot tell if what you are seeing falls within normal as we may have different assessments at what you are seeing so if you feel you really are looking at blood and inflamed tissue you should call the veterinarian.

Dr. O,

Ah Ha - considering your assessment I'd say she's "normal" - in that sense. :o)I have no idea where I got the info about bleeding during the cycle. Maybe because at times I think she's human. :o) LOL.

I do have to have the vet out soon to drain some derma cysts she has at the throat latch that I can't seem to get open, so will have her take a look. Thanks much for your advice.

Shirl
