We attended a show in May this year. The day after we got home our 7 year old gelding, starting coughing and getting a clear nasal discharge. He went off feed. Within a week I had 14 horses with the same symptoms. It went through 30 of the 40 horses we have. Some worst than others. Even though they were eating they lost weight. We didn't treat assuming it assuming it was a virus.
Many barns at the show had the same problem.
Most horses were better within a week but some had symptoms for several weeks.
Now I have 4 they seem to be having the symptoms again. Has anyone dealt with anything like this.
I have been showing for over 30 years and have never had anything like this.
Thanks
Annetta

Hello Annetta,
Yes the infection last May was most certainly a virus and most likely either a flu or herpes virus.

I am unclear here about the history of these 4 horses that are now sick. Did they ever completely recover? And when you say the same symptoms I presume you mean coughing and a clear nasal discharge. Is there fever present too? And what are the findings on auscultation of the chest?
