Does Anyone have any idea what it might cost to surgically remove an eye that has abscessed and can not be salvaged? The vet said the horse should go to the university please if anyone has an idea on this I would appreciate it.

Susan - I've had horses at two University Clinics - one - WSU - was super reasonable - much less expensive than the Vet I was using at the time - the other UTenn - was over the top expensive. Call and ask for the probable cost. They should be able to give you a very close estimate. Good luck - Cheryl K

Prices do vary considerably Susan so there is no way to give you a reasonable estimate of what you should expect. Locally practitioners as of several years ago do it in the field starting at 600-800 dollars and the university charges around 1200-1500 dollars. DrO

Dr. O you are pretty darn good I just talked with The U of I I spoke to the ophthalmology department and they stated that if the surgery can be done standing which they said is very successful it would run approximately $1,200.00 if they have to lay the horse down it will be approximately $1,600.00!! Thanks for the excellent estimation Thanks again! I love horseadvice.com ;)

Susan, check out the old thread "Recovery if Enucleation" for my experience which you may find helpful. My vet did the enucleation in the field and with my mare under general anesthesia. It was $900. I wonder if you don't have that option because the eye has abscessed into the socket? My mare recovered beautifully, was grazing two hours after the procedure and will be giving a riding lesson for me in the morning. Best wishes, Stacy
