Hi, Friday I had a prepurchase on a mare. She passed everything and we xrayed everything with a clean result on all films. It has been mentioned to me that she is lazy and acts tired if ridden a couple days in a row. She is currently fed bermuda hay and beet pulp. When the vet did the round pen work her heart elevated to 70. After ten minutes it was still 70 and then after 30 minutes it was at 40. He said that concerned him but figured she was out of shape which she is. About an hour after the exercise session, he pulled blood for a CBC and a Coggins. The Coggins has not come back yet but the CBC showed low WBC and RBC levels. Now the vet feels this is a red flag. He told me to put her on Source and Red Cell. We are waiting for the Coggins but we live in Arizona so he feels the chances are slim she has it. If he is negative he said he'd come back in two weeks to retest her blood. We also noted in the exam that she has rings growing down both hooves like fever rings. He said they look like they had been growing that way for about 3 to 4 months. She has not left the property in over a year. Do you have any suggestions as to what could cause this? Would ulcers reduce both rbc and wbc? Two years ago she was in Phoenix and the trainer thought she had ulcers. Any suggestions into what can cause this would be greatly appreciated? Also, is this treatable? It concerned me that the vet called it a Red Flag. Thanks, joAnn

Also she never grows a winter coat and she is an 8 year old Dutch Warmblood.

Hello joAnn, What were the laboratory results? If you could include the units and lab normals that will help us. But I have to wonder. If the horse's long term history of being lazy and having little stamina is not what you are looking why consider the horse for purchase. I guess we could conjecture a disease process that might be treatable but do you really want to buy a sick horse no matter how clean the radiographs? DrO

Hi JoAnn,how is she bred[father mothers father?] I am Dutch and have had quite a lot of KWPNers. Some lines tend to be lazy. Jos

Hi Jos her dad is Idocus. Her mom is Nelissa out of G Ramiro Z. My vet said her blood in march wasn't anemic. The owner had her stuffed in a 10x10 stall for three months. She is about 16'3". She was really mean in that stall. I put her in a 16x12 with a 50x16 run. Her attitude is completely different. My vet is thinking she has ulcers which could lead to low blood counts. He put her on red cell and source. I feed it with 2 cups safechoice and she gets 2 cups rice bran with flax seed at lunch. In 2 weeks well retest her blood and if she is still low we will scope her. Luckily she came back negative for coggins too - phew! What do you guys think?

Well nor Idocus and his ancestors or Ramiro are known for lazy horses Certainly being a mare I would expect a 'hot' horse so go look for her problems! Bet she will surprise you when healthy! Jos
