I am looking at a just-turned 6 year old Holsteiner for my daughter. We have been told: When the current owner purchased him, her vet noted "seedy- toe" on x-rays, but he passed the vet exam. In the past 2 years of her ownership, he has had White-Line Disease. All areas of the disease were cut out, and he was given the winter of 2008 off. There was no rotation of the bone. He now is sound, showing and jumping 3'3". His shoes have 2 layers of ring pads. My question: Is this hereditary or environmental? Is/will he be prone to this? If I have his feet x-rayed, can my vet tell from x-rays, if there has been damage done, and is it permanent or on ongoing? In short, can a horse go through this, and go on to have a healthy hoof without issues?

Hello Rebecca,
I have probably treated 3 or 4 dozen cases of WLD over the years using the principles in the article. Once cured I have not had problems with WLD returning. There is a person on these boards who seems to be having recurrent problems but I remain uncertain the initial infection has ever been cleared up completely.

How do I find out if the infection has cleared up completely? Does WLD always lead to permanent hoof damage? Does WLD always lead to founder?

The article discusses the appearance of WLD which is generally how it is diagnosed but I would recommend you have an exam done by a veterinarian who understands your concerns. I have not had problems with either permanent damage or founder.
