  Discussion on Bruised soles?

Dr.O. I have read the article, I think Hank may have bruised his soles on gravel. If something like this happens do you "normally" visually see the bruise on the sole??

He started out with a bounding DP and heat in his LF hoof. The DP and heat went pretty much away with bute, but he did seem to remain tender, but not bad.

I removed the bute and the DP and heat returned quite quickly and so did his lameness on uneven hard ground or gravel. Is this typical of bruised soles?

I don't know if you saw my other post, I did have the vet out and he diagnosed an abscess but could get no drainage...he did have a black defect in his white line and the vet dug it out until it was gone. In your experience does this sound like an abscess or a bruise? He is not 3 legged (he was close the day the vet came) Out in pasture he moves free and normal on hard ground his stride shortens and he will trip on the LF if he hits a piece of gravel or hard uneven ground. Now his RF is starting to act a little ouchy with an increased DP and a little heat, I am a little worried about sending him into a bout of laminitis with the excessive weight bearing on RF, but I am confused as to treat this as an abscess or a bruise.

Thanks

No often the bruise is not visible for a time and rarely visible on dark hooves. In general abscesses are not bute responsive but without an exam I cannot determine the cause of your horses lameness.

Thanks Dr.O. This has been bute responsive, My experience has been the same, I do believe he DID have an abscess when the vet came out...he was almost 3 legged on soft and hard ground and bute made no difference.

Now he is bute responsive and a little short strided on hard ground, soft ground he seems fine or with boots on.

Are bruises "normally" bute responsive?

Thanks

Thanks again
