My 3 year old filly is completely sound but wears full pads on her front feet because she has paper thin soles. Yesterday the bugs were particularly bad and she got running. I am assuming that she pulled a shoe from running and then kept going. When I g ot home she had a bloody tummy from all the bug bites and no shoe. I don't know at what point in the day she pulled the shoe or how much running she did on it after she lost it.

What is interesting is that she is not lame but is carrying a stronger than normal digital pulse and some heat in the foot that lost the shoe.

My question is this. 1. How concerned should I be about the pulse and the heat considering the fact that she is not lame? 2. I am assuming that the heat and pulse are caused by infla mation. Is it o.k. to put a full pad back on her foot while there is inflamation in it?

Hello Ella,
1) It is possible that the foot will become painful so I would put on bute till normal to help forestall any inflammation related complications.
2) You hope for the best and if the horse remains nonpainful until the farrier gets out put the shoe back on before more bruising occurs. However I would not allow the horse free exercise until the foot cool and the horse sound off the bute.

Shoe is back on. Heat is gone. Pulse gone. Thanks Dr. O.
